Course Summary
History is not just an account of the past but an investigation of why things happened the way they did. This fascinating and challenging subject will allow you explore the events of the past as you analyse the effects and significance of many historical major events.�If you have an enquiring mind, this course will give you the opportunity to develop your interest and enthusiasm for history and will give you an understanding of its inherent value and significance.
Course Details
You will develop further key academic qualities such as source analysis, critical thinking, research and academic writing through a variety of learning experiences such as lectures, one-to-one tutorials, ICT based tasks, practical work, group work, discussions and debates and personal research.�You will explore a range of topics and have the opportunity to research your own area of interest for coursework. We allow students a large degree of freedom when researching their coursework topic and are eager to encourage the exploration of areas of particular interest. Popular topics to date have included Nazi Germany, the causes of WWI and WWII and the Soviet Union.During the course, we will cover the following modules:Popular Culture and the Witchcraze of the 16th and 17th centuries, which looks at social history and social change and the phenomenon of witchcraft and witch hunting in early modern Europe.The Wars of the Roses and Henry VII, England 1445-1509, which will cover war and politics in late medieval England.The Crusades, 1095-1192. looking at the First, Second and Third Crusades, and the Crusader States in the Middle East.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
During the course you will be assessed by three formal exams which comprise 80% of your final grade and coursework which will comprise 20% of your grade.
Progression to Year 2 will be dependent on successful completion of the first year taking into account Internal Progression Examination results and the Key Assessment Profile throughout the first year.
Entry requirements
You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 5 or above including maths and English Language, in subjects relevant to your A Level or A+ Programme subject choices.

A Level History is an excellent stepping stone to progress to Higher Education as universities recognise the depth of study and critical sources analysis that the course develops.
There are a wide range of undergraduate degrees available in history both locally and further afield. The department has sent students to St Andrews, Kings College, Manchester, UAE, Bristol, Wolverhampton and Lancaster. History can be combined with many other subjects, for example Government and Politics or Law. The sorts of jobs history graduates go on to do are wide ranging including teaching, research, documentary film makers, journalism, marketing, business and many more.
Many cross transferable skills correlate well with a variety of subjects of study and professional skills. In addition, many employers appreciate the skills and knowledge that history students will have gained during their studies.
