Bricklayer Apprenticeship Standard

Apprentices learn the craft of bricklaying, including laying bricks, blocks and stone, as well as reading technical drawings and understanding construction principles, preparing them for roles in the construction industry.

Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures e.g. chimney stacks. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations. A bricklayer may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group (gang) may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying gangs as well as other trades. On completion of this Apprenticeship, the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card at the appropriate level.

Your progress is continually monitored throughout the course. Assessments are arranged when necessary and these take place on-the-job. Together with the college day release course, which would be over 24-30 months. Assessments will include: By observing your performance; responses to written and/or spoken questions to show your knowledge and understanding; e-portfolio of supporting evidence containing testimonies, reflective accounts, assignments, work products such as activity planning sheets, completed risk assessments, continual professional development evidence. Once you have completed your programme, met all of the pre-requisites for the End Point Assessment, including English and maths requirements, and your employer is satisfied that you are consistently working at or above the level set out in the occupational standard, you will be put through for your End Point Assessment which will take place within a 4 month period. A minimum expectation of GCSE Grade 2's in�English and maths�or equivalent.

If you successfully achieve all parts of the apprenticeship, your assessor will discuss with you and your employer the next steps to take. Dependent on your roles and responsibilities, this may be the next level of the subject you have been studying already or a different pathway.
