Course Details
The course explores a range of creative specialisms, including traditional art, craft and design subjects, along with learning how to create artwork through digital media. The development of drawing, 3D, compositional and presentation skills; which are important to any creative student, are fundamental. During the year you will develop a skills portfolio that consists of fine art, design, print, 3D and graphics based projects, and have the opportunity to select and apply your chosen skills in personal creative projects.
As well as developing your creative skills, you will learn about careers within the creative industries and be supported to help make decisions about your future and progression options. The course is full time and takes one year to complete.
To achieve the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design Skills you need to obtain a Pass or above in all coursework units, and demonstrate a positive approach to learning.
You will continue to improve your maths and/or English skills in structured lessons alongside your course and maths and English will also be integrated into your main course programme.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
You are continuously assessed throughout the course both formally and informally. Assessments take the form of an individual display of work, which is assessed and evaluated by the staff who teach you. The results are available for discussion and inform how you might best progress on the course. Your overall qualification is designated a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Entry requirements
You will have three GCSEs at grade 3 or above plus a good portfolio. One of the GCSE's must include an art & design based subject. This can include Art & Design, Photography, Graphics, Textiles, Product Design or BTEC Craft. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at your course discussion appointment. If you do not have a minimum GCSE grade 4 for Maths / English you would study these as a part of your timetabled study programme. These structured weekly sessions will help you to improve your skills in these vital subject/s. In addition Maths and English development is integrated into practical course sessions and assignments.
Your next steps...
Full, successful completion of the course can lead on to a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design, Graphics, Fashion, Games, Animation, Media or Photography. You should also have passed a GCSE in English or Maths at 4 or above if you are resitting one or both of these crucial subjects.
