Allows learners to build a full portfolio of evidence, showcasing both practical and theoretical achievements.
Designed for those who wish to pursue a career in the industry, progress to Level 2 Hairdressing/Beauty Therapy, or enter employment in a junior/assistant role.
Course Details
Diploma (Full Qualification � typically 10�12 units)
The Diploma is the most comprehensive Level 1 qualification. It includes all Certificate content plus additional creative and employability-focused units. Content usually includes:
Shampoo and Condition Hair
Style Women�s Hair (basic plaiting, twisting, setting, blow-drying)
Basic Skin Care (cleansing, toning, moisturising, simple make-up application)
Basic Nail Art & Nail Care
Themed Face Painting
Temporary Hair Colouring
Create an Image Using Hair & Beauty Techniques
Introduction to the Hair & Beauty Sector
Presenting a Professional Image in a Salon
Health & Safety in the Salon

How will it be delivered and assessed?
1. Practical Observations
Learners are observed carrying out services (e.g. shampooing, styling, nail care, skin care).
Must be performed on real clients (or peers in training) under assessment conditions.
The assessor checks technique, health & safety, communication and professionalism.
2. Assignments / Knowledge Tasks
Written or oral assignments to show understanding of underpinning knowledge.
Examples: health & safety, salon conduct, anatomy basics, customer care.
3. Portfolio of Evidence
Learners compile a portfolio (paper or e-portfolio) showing:
Records of practical assessments
Written knowledge evidence
Photographic evidence (e.g. before/after styles, nail art, themed looks)
Must be internally verified and meet awarding body requirements. A final, graded assessment where learners bring together skills from different units.
Entry requirements
Entry Requirements � Level 1 Hair & Beauty
No formal academic entry requirements � this qualification is open to all learners.
Learners should have a genuine interest in the hair and beauty sector.
Recommended minimum age is usually 14�16+, depending on the centre.
A reasonable level of English and communication skills is needed, as learners will interact with clients and complete written tasks.
Learners will complete an initial assessment in English and maths to determine the right support.
We will hold an informal interview and arrange a taster session to ensure the course is suitable.
Equipment required
All equipment is supplied during the Level 1 programme.
