Course Summary

Our Fast Track Maths and Further Maths course is for those students who excel in mathematics and can pick up new skills easily. You will end your 2 years at college with 2 full A Levels – one in Maths and one in Further Maths. Our Fast Track students achieve excellent results in their A Level Maths qualification which they take after just 9 months at college, and the results for our Further Maths course are also some of the best in the region.

You will study not just the normal A Level Maths content of algebra, trigonometry and calculus but also develop knowledge and understanding of matrices, complex numbers, polar coordinates and mathematical proof.

By studying all these things you become an ordered thinking, logical problem solver with enviable skills which universities and employers all want. You will already know your A Level Maths grade if applying to universities before you submit your UCAS application and this can be a great way of proving your capabilities to competitive universities.

Course Details

As well as studying the A Level Maths course (please see A Level Maths course content), the Further Maths work in Pure Maths covers:

  • Complex numbers and argand diagrams
  • Series, roots of polynomials, matrices and transformations
  • Vectors in 3 dimensions, proof by induction, extended calculus, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and conic sections.

In Further Mechanics we cover:

  • Momentum and impulse, work, energy and power
  • Elastic strings and springs and collisions in one and two dimensions.

In Further Statistics topics include:

  • Discrete random variables
  • Poisson distributions, geometric distributions, negative binomial distributions, chi squared tests and lots of hypothesis testing.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Exam: 100%

Entry requirements

Students should have a love of mathematics to take on the Fast Track and Further Maths course. 50% of your lessons will be maths, so it is important you are prepared for that. The course is rewarding and satisfying, as well as fast pace. Most students who choose Fast Track and Further Maths will finish college with 4 full A Levels. They are the students who want to stand out and prove they can do more than just the “average” 3 A Levels.

Your next steps...

By completing an A Level in Further Maths, you show that you can extend your knowledge to a level some students meet in the first or second year of a degree course. You will stand out in the crowd of UCAS or apprenticeship applicants as someone who is able to really push themselves.

Further Maths is hugely helpful in careers of accountancy, engineering, economics and computer science – as well as a great facilitator into many other career pathways.
