Course Summary
The Criminology course explores fundamental questions about crime, including why people commit crimes, what counts as criminal behaviour, and how society defines and responds to deviance. You’ll study different types of crime, the reasons behind criminal actions – whether environmental, social, or personal – and what happens after a crime, including how offenders are dealt with by the police, courts, and prisons.
Beyond crime itself, you’ll develop key skills like researching, analysing case studies, evaluating evidence, critical thinking, and constructing clear, persuasive arguments – skills valuable for many careers.
Our Sixth Form College is proud to be one of the top centres nationally for Criminology, boasting a 100% pass rate and excellent grades in 2025. With experienced teachers and a supportive environment, this course offers a strong foundation for university, careers in criminal justice, or simply understanding the world better. Entry requirements
If you’re curious about crime and the justice system, Criminology could be the perfect subject for you. Maybe you enjoy true crime documentaries, real-life criminal cases, or following the news – this course builds on that curiosity and asks deeper questions about why people commit crimes and how justice works.
You’ll need strong English skills, as assessments involve extended writing and analysis, and an ability to think critically and evaluate evidence. If you enjoy exploring different viewpoints, debating real-life case studies, and questioning the decisions made within the justice system, you’ll thrive in Criminology.
Your next steps...
Criminology opens doors to a wide range of exciting futures. Many students progress to university to study Criminology, Law, Psychology, Sociology, Forensic Investigation, or specialist pathways like Policing and Investigation or Criminology with Psychology.
Career options are equally diverse, from becoming a Police Officer, Probation Officer, Prison Officer, or Crime Scene Investigator, to working in youth offending teams, victim support, or social work. With further study, roles such as forensic psychologist, criminologist, or even intelligence services (MI5, border control) become possibilities.
You’ll also take part in Aspire+ activities like the Bar Mock Trial, where you argue cases in real courtrooms (our students reached the National Final at the Old Bailey!), or Solve the Crime Club, piecing together evidence with your peers. These experiences strengthen your teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, while giving you a taste of real-world criminology in action.
