Course Summary

The course is delivered and assessed using a wide range of flexible teaching, learning and assessment methods in a friendly and supportive environment, and allows students to work at their own pace. Each unit has clearly defined areas of knowledge and practical skills to be learned and assessed, which have been assembled into workbooks. The course is delivered using a range of strategies including mini-lectures and practical demonstrations and where appropriate ICT strategies are used. Students will also be encouraged, and supported, to learn independently and in small groups. Extension tasks are available to provide for students wishing to further extend their knowledge and practical skills beyond the minimum course requirements.

Course Details

This Level 1 course is part of a range of qualifications within the Foundation Learning framework and provides an ideal starting point for students wishing to gain a motor vehicle qualification. The course has a strong focus towards practical learning and is intended to provide students with opportunities to learn basic motor vehicle servicing skills in a small group setting and is delivered in one of our well-equipped workshops. The necessary knowledge to carry out the tasks safely and competently is also covered as part of the course.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The qualification is assessed using a wide range of methods, which include writing short reports, on-line assessments, short answer questions, multi-choice questions, Practical workshop assessments.

Entry requirements

2 GCSEs grade E-G, Entry Level 3, or another relevant Entry Level qualification. You will have a pre-induction interview/ assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

Equipment required

You will also need to demonstrate commitment and flexibility towards learning. This is a college based course and requires regular attendance to all classes. The ten common areas covered in this qualification are: lubrication, cooling, braking, fuel and exhaust, ignition, transmission, steering and suspension, electrical, wheels and tyres, and body and interior cleaning. As with all foundation learning qualifications, this course requires that you also study subjects such as Tutorials, Experience of Work, Maths and English Functional skills or GCSC's, which form part of your wider education and will enhance your future studies/employment prospects.

Your next steps...

There is progression within this qualification to Level 2 study programme in Motor Vehicle. This will allow candidates to progress to the Automotive Apprenticeship qualifications.
