Course Details
This course is designed to give you the skills required to maintain and repair light vehicles. You will cover a range of topics from how to remove and refit wheels and tyres, to engine dismantle and rebuild. As well as how to work safely whilst you will develop your personal effectiveness skills and communication skills to enable you to progress to further training or employment.
The study programme will also incorporate a range of work related experience activities to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to further/higher education, employment or an apprenticeship.
Level 1 is the entry qualification for this field and will take one year to complete. Your time at college will be spent equally between the classroom covering theory and the workshop to put theory into practice.
As part of your study programme, you will complete a maths and/or English qualification alongside your chosen course if you have not already achieved a grade 4 or above.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
You will be assessed by the use of practical assessments and assignments that will form part of a portfolio of your work. You will also complete a number of multiple choice online tests during the course.

As a condition of being offered a place on this course, you would be expected to meet the following entry requirements:Submit a school report showing your attendance, behaviour and effort detailsAttend the Department Experience Day in June 2026Complete a summer assignment which would be set on Experience Day in June 2026You will need to achieve/have achieved GCSEs at grade 3 or above in Maths and a grade 2 or above in English Language
Your next steps...
You will develop practical skills in this trade and once you have completed the Level 1 course, you will then progress onto the Level 2 in Motor Vehicle.
During Level 2, you will be able to build on the skills you have already developed and gain further skills in inspection, exhaust systems, fabrication and welding, batteries and braking system components as well as enterprise and entrepreneurial concepts and problem solving.
You may wish to seek an apprenticeship or employment in the automotive industry as a qualified vehicle technician in a main dealer, an MOT tester or roadside technician.
Some of our Level 3 students decide to apply for university to study on Motor Sport courses and pursue a career in the Motor Sport industry.
