Course Summary

A Level Biology is a fascinating and dynamic course that explores the science of life—from the smallest cells to entire ecosystems. You’ll investigate how living organisms function and interact, studying key topics such as cell structure and division, DNA and genetics, human anatomy (including the heart, lungs, and kidneys), ecology, biodiversity, and the principles behind conservation and human health.

Alongside developing a deeper understanding of biological processes, you’ll build essential practical and analytical skills through experiments and investigations. Biology links well with many other subjects, and the course supports progression into a wide range of science-related degrees and careers, including medicine, veterinary science, environmental science, biotechnology, and more. With expert guidance and support, you’ll be prepared for both higher education and the world of scientific work.

Course Details

Development of Practical Skills in Biology: This module focuses on developing essential laboratory skills and techniques, including data analysis and scientific methodology.

Foundations in Biology: This module lays the groundwork for the rest of the course, covering topics such as cell structure, biological molecules, and enzymes.

Exchange and Transport: This module explores the processes of gas exchange, nutrient transport, and circulation in living organisms.

Biodiversity, Evolution, and Disease: This module delves into the diversity of life, evolutionary processes, and the causes and mechanisms of infectious diseases.

Communication, Homeostasis, and Energy: This module covers topics such as nervous and hormonal communication, homeostasis, and energy transfer in living organisms.

Genetics, Evolution, and Ecosystems: This module explores genetics, inheritance patterns, evolution, and the interactions of organisms within ecosystems.

Entry requirements

A GCSE in Biology (or Combined Science) provides a useful foundation, as A Level Biology builds directly on those concepts. You should enjoy understanding how living systems work and be prepared to make connections between different biological processes. Strong study habits, independent learning, and good time management will help you succeed. Reviewing GCSE material, practicing past papers, and being confident to ask questions are excellent ways to bridge the gap to A Level study.

Your next steps...

Studying Biology opens doors to a wide range of degrees and careers. Many students progress to university to study Biology or more specialist fields such as Genetics, Zoology, Marine Biology, or Environmental Science. Others go directly into training and employment with organisations like the NHS. Career paths include conservation, forensic science, toxicology, consultancy, pharmaceuticals, and many more. The skills you develop—critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving—are highly valued across both scientific and non-scientific professions.
