Course Details

This course aims to introduce you to a broad range of topics relevant to the performing arts business and is designed to prepare you for progression to further study at advanced level providing candidates with performance experiences and opportunities to develop skills and talents relevant to the industry. You will have the opportunity to work on a number of performances based around scripted plays, dance and singing. Also, you will be encouraged to release your creative flair, devising plays and theatre pieces of your own. You will develop your talents and progress from the course with the basics of being an all-round performer. The course consists of practical projects based around units such as acting skills and techniques, dance performance, solo music performance, devising performance, performing arts business where candidates will be assessed by coursework and performance projects. As part of your study programme here at the College alongside your chosen course you will complete a maths and/or English qualification if you have not already achieved a grade 4 or above. (This will be a GCSE for all students with a grade 3). The study programme will also incorporate a range of work related experience activities to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to further/higher education, employment or an apprenticeship.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You are assessed throughout the course both formally and informally. Assessments take the form of both practical and theory, which is assessed and evaluated by the staff who teach you. The results are available for discussion and advice and you are given a record showing how best you might progress on the course. Your overall qualification is designated a Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction*.

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at your course discussion appointment.�Experience in acting is necessary along with some performance ability, typically in acting, dancing and/or musical theatre. Your level of ability will be assessed in an informal one to one audition with the course leader.

Successful completion of BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts qualifies you for application to Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in general or specialist subject areas, a merit grade being preferred for progression.
