Course Summary

A Level Physical Education is a dynamic and engaging course that explores the world of sport, exercise, and physical activity through both theoretical and practical learning. Students study a wide range of topics including anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, skill acquisition, sports psychology, and the social and historical influences on sport. The course allows students to apply their knowledge by analysing and evaluating their own performance in a chosen sport.

Through this, they develop a deep understanding of how the body responds to exercise, how skills are acquired, and how psychological and societal factors impact performance. A Level PE also builds valuable transferable skills such as critical thinking, data interpretation, research, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving – making it an excellent choice for those passionate about sport and interested in careers in sports science, coaching, teaching, physiotherapy, and beyond.

Entry requirements

A Level PE is ideal if you have a genuine passion for sport and physical activity, both on and off the field. This course blends theory with practice, so you’ll need enthusiasm for both academic study and improving your own performance.

Your next steps...

A Level PE opens doors to a wide range of futures. Many students go on to study Sport Science, Physiotherapy, Teaching, or Psychology, while others progress into careers in coaching, fitness, or elite sport. Apprenticeships are also a strong pathway – with recent students securing opportunities such as a Degree Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying with Balfour Beatty. Even if your future career isn’t directly linked to sport, A Level PE provides transferable skills that employers and universities value.
