A-level Art and Design (Fine Art)
Course Details
Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of fine art media, processes and techniques. They will be made aware of both traditional and new media. Students will explore the use of drawing for different purposes, using a variety of methods and media on a variety of scales. Students will use sketchbooks to underpin their work where appropriate. They will also be encouraged to break out of their sketchbooks to pursue other work, in both 2D as well as 3D.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Students will be taught by 3 subject specialists over the 2 year course. They will begin by completing workshop style lessons until January which aims to builds their confidence in using an array of different processes and techniques, as well as developing their ability to analyse art in a critical way. From January of year 12 through to February of Year 13 students will work on their main topic for their portfolio. We encourage students to choose their own topic, so that they can really engage with it and get the best results.
Entry requirements
Ideally a grade 6 or above at GCSE art is required. However, other subjects similar the art such as design based subjects may be considered alongside submission of a portfolio.
Equipment required
A3 Sketchbooks are provided at a small cost of £3. All paper, paint, pastels etc are provided for students by the school. A good camera or camera phone is also recommended.

If you are accepted on to the course, we set a 'holiday homework' that requires you to take photographs of buildings, structures and places that you visit. These images will become the inspiration for the workshops that we work on at the start of year 12.
