Course Summary
AQA A-level Biology explores the complex and fascinating science of living organisms. You will gain a deeper understanding of how cells, systems, and organisms function, how they interact with each other and the environment, and how biological advances are shaping our future. This course develops your practical skills, scientific thinking, and critical analysis, preparing you for a wide range of science-related degrees and careers.
Course Details
Taught over two years. Topics 1-4 are taught in Y12 and Topics 4-8 are taught in Y131. Biological molecules 2. Cells 3. Organisms exchange substances with their environment 4. Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms 5. Energy transfers in and between organisms 6. Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments 7. Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems 8. The control of gene expression
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Lessons will be a mix of teacher-led theory, group work, practical investigations, and independent study. You will complete 12 required practicals over two years, which are assessed through written exams and practical endorsements. Assessment is entirely exam-based, with three written papers at the end of Year 13: Paper 1: Topics 1–4, Paper 2: Topics 5–8 and Paper 3: Synoptic questions and practical skills. Competency in practical skills is assessed over the two years and reported as Pass / Fail.
