Course Summary
This A Level in Government and Politics offers students the chance to explore how governments function, how political decisions are made, and how political ideologies shape our society. The course is rich in discussion, current affairs, and critical thinking, helping students better understand both the UK and global political systems.
Course Details
People and Politics: Nature of democracy, political parties, pressure groups, key political ideologies.
- Governing the UK: Parliament, Prime Minister and Cabinet, judiciary, executive powers, role of opposition.
- Key Themes in Political Analysis: Economic and social policy, criminal justice, environmental issues.
- Political Ideologies: Conservatism, Liberalism, Socialism, Anarchism, Feminism, Ecologism.
- Global Politics: Sovereignty, interdependence, supranationalism.
Trips: Includes a subsidised visit to Parliament and London attractions in the summer term of Year 12.

Assessment Methods:

- Exam-style short-answer questions based on past papers.

- Presentations and debates, being able to discuss and put your ideas across.
- Answers are short, focused, and built around ideas, extracts, and themes.

Entry requirements
Level 5 and above ideally. You do not have to have studied politics before.
Equipment required
Standard school equipment. A device for researching purposes would be useful.
