Course Summary
A-Level Product Design is an engaging and creative course that equips students with the knowledge and skills to design and make innovative products using a variety of materials and technologies. Students learn to problem-solve, think critically, and apply design thinking to real-world contexts—preparing them for a wide range of careers and further education in design, engineering, architecture, and more. The AQA course is designed to continue straight on from GCSE Design and Technology. This course opens pathways into creative and technical degrees, apprenticeships, and careers in industrial/product design, architecture, engineering, interior design, and more.
Course Details
The course is based on the AQA A-Level Design and Technology: Product Design specification. It combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, focusing on design principles, materials science, manufacturing processes, and technological developments. Students will explore historical and contemporary design, sustainability, user-centred design, and commercial viability.
Topics include:
• Core technical principles (materials, performance characteristics, processes)
• Designing and making principles (design methods, prototype development, product analysis)
• Specialist knowledge in chosen materials (timber, metals, polymers, etc.)
How will it be delivered and assessed?
• Delivery: A mix of classroom-based theory, practical workshops, CAD/CAM sessions, independent research, and design projects.
• Assessment:
o Paper 1: Technical Principles (2.5 hours, 30% of A-Level)
o Paper 2: Designing and Making Principles (1.5 hours, 20% of A-Level)
o NEA (Non-Exam Assessment): Iterative Design Project (50% of A-Level) – a substantial design-and-make project based on a context of the student’s choice.
Entry requirements
• Grade 5 or above in GCSE Design and Technology (preferred)
• Strong grades (Grade 5 or above) in English, Science and Maths are also recommended
• A genuine interest in design, innovation, and solving real-world problems
